The Best of Newport
Our 2008 Picks - Romantic Getaways

La Farge Perry House
A luxurious bed and breakfast on a quiet tree-lined residential street, the La Farge Perry is more than a B&B – it’s an elegant, sophisticated home-away-from-home for the most discerning travelers. Superb furnishings, crystal chandeliers, and plush fabrics fill the public and private rooms. The innkeeper is a chef and an award-winning gardener: the inn is filled with gorgeous fresh flowers year-round, and the lavish gourmet breakfasts are memorable. The gardens are extensive and meticulously maintained; beautiful view greets you from every window in the inn. The hospitality and warm welcome that one finds at the La Farge Perry have resulted in an astounding 47% repeat guest rate, and it’s easy to see why.

Adele Turner Inn
Located on Newport’s first gas-lit street, this is an idyllic spot for a getaway with someone special. Each beautifully decorated guestroom has a fireplace and fine Italian linens, turndown service with handmade chocolates, and (my personal favorite), coffee delivered to your room each morning at the time of your choice. Book one of two deluxe accommodations for an over-the-top experience: the three-room Tycoon Suite is huge – covering the entire front of the third floor, with a king-sized mahogany bed and a two-person whirlpool tub framed by a pillared canopy under skylights. Very sophisticated and dreamy. The Harborview Spa Room on the third floor has French doors leading to your own rooftop deck with panoramic harbor view and hot tub - imagine sipping a glass of wine here while the sun goes down – you’ll create a memory to keep forever.

Cliffside Inn
This is a magical getaway that combines deluxe amenties with Victorian elegance, and has a reputation as one of New England’s most distinguished Bed & Breakfast luxury inns. My favorite place to stay here is the two-level Garden Suite, which has a huge bathroom with heated tile floor and French doors leading to its own private patio. The suite also has a lovely, well-stocked library with built-in seating for two, and is perfect for relaxing. As a guest in one of the Cliffside suites, you may book a personalized body massage and spa treatment, and have it in your room – heavenly. Completing your escape to luxury is a multi-course gourmet breakfast and lavish afternoon high tea. In fact, the book Great Tea Rooms of America has named the Cliffside as one of the 20 best in the country!

Ivy Lodge
Living their lifelong dream of becoming innkeepers, your hosts exude the warmth and hospitality that comes from doing what they love. With tremendous enthusiasm and recent renovations, they have turned the historic Ivy Lodge into a gracious and romantic haven. A breathtaking 33-foot Gothic oak entry hall with wrap-around balconies welcomes you back to the Gilded Age, and classic Victorian elegance greets you at every turn. Spacious guestrooms are individually decorated with rich fabrics and wallpapers, fireplaces, and an old-world feel. My favorite is the Victoria Room with its monotone fabrics, blonde furnishings, king bed, and two-person whirlpool tub, but the most requested is the Turret Room where Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver stayed. A wonderful breakfast is served in the regal dining room; complimentary snacks and beverages are always on hand. Romance, elegance, hospitality – it’s all waiting for you at the Ivy Lodge.

Marshall Slocum Inn
This is a little treasure of an inn, with five rooms tastefully decorated in an antique nautical style. If you're looking for a romantic Newport destination where the Victorian influence doesn't dominate, this is the place. Rich wood floors, Oriental rugs, soothing colors, crisp white linens, down comforters and pillows you can just sink into - it's classic and understatedly elegant. A spacious back deck overlooks manicured gardens, and the front porch beckons at cocktail hour. Your hosts are both hospitality professionals, and the first class service and attention you receive at the Marshall Slocum is a testament to their experience at the Boston Ritz Carlton, where they met.

Sarah Kendall House
The highly acclaimed Sarah Kendall House is delightfully romantic Victorian getaway which is rated one of 50 Best Bed and Breakfasts for a Honeymoon. There are no guests under 12. Rooms are airy and immaculate, and distinctly decorated with period antiques and fireplaces. My favorite is the Isaac Kendall room with a king-sized bed and view of the harbor, but the Tower Suite on the third floor is a close second. Located in a quiet residential area, you are within easy walking distance of downtown Newport. An outstanding breakast prepared by the gourmet cook and innkeeper is elegantly served on fine china and crystal, and frosty pitchers of lemonade and iced tea are offered in the afternoon. The expansive porch with its wicker furniture is the ideal spot to watch a sunset and sip a glass of wine. Your gracious hosts have thought of every detail to make your stay complete, including beach towels and sunscreen. Try the Sarah Kendall with your special someone, it will be a memorable experience.

A wonderfully romantic Victorian inn located in a neighborhood of gracious and historic homes and large shade trees. Your hostess Jan Taylor has created an atmosphere where her guests feel pampered, restful and excited to explore the many sites of Newport, all within walking distance. The inn is casually elegant, beautifully decorated, and furnished with period antiques. Guestrooms are spacious and have a king or queen-sized bed, fine linens, and down comforters – sink into comfort here. Each room has a sitting area and provides a champagne set-up for those special celebrations, of which this spot is truly worthy! The three-course gourmet breakfast is a real treat – make sure you don’t miss it. Elegant is the only word to describe the breakfast
you will enjoy served on the finest china and crystal, and the To Die For French Toast really is.
